The last two weeks have been crazy busy with getting everything in before Spring Break. I had completed my primary research, user journey map, and am in process of my storyboards.
Primary Research
For the past two weeks, I have conducted interviews as well as sent out a questionnaire. I have collected quantitative and qualitative data from my findings.
For the interviews, I first talked to the participants to get to know them better. I then went and connected the SmartThings application to the TV. I had told them to do different tasks such as going to Netflix, finding a specific show, adding a new app to the TV, etc. For those small tasks, I have found many users had problems with the application. Most of the problems I had already specified before.
Qualitative Data Findings
Participant #1 did not enjoy typing in long movie names as the 4D pad was not very efficient and it took a long time. She exclaimed that it was 'frustrating her'. I went on to ask her if it would be easier to use the phone keyboard or a microphone than typing it all in. She answered with '100% yes'.
Participant #2 was struggling a bit to figure out how to add a new app to the TV. I have concluded that adding an app such as (Netflix, Hulu, etc.) onto the SmartThings application remotely would be easier to add and download apps as well as find them and switch to them easier.
Participant #3 noticed the 4D pad was also not user-friendly. She also did not like the multiple pages of the remote as she said there should be one page for the remote buttons instead of flipping through them.
Some other findings I have found from my questionnaire were some buttons on a remote are not used or users do not know their functions. Those buttons included pre-channel, return, and fast forward/reverse.
Quantitative Data Findings
I have collected data from my questionnaire responses. I had 30 people take my survey.

My findings:
1. 20% (6 of 30) of the questionnaire users have a Samsung TV. 60% (18 of 30) have a Roku and the other 20% (6 of 30) have either a Vizio, LG, or a different TV brand.
2. 2 of the 6 users of Samsung users, use the SmartThings Application.
3. 21 of the users use some type of TV remote app.
4. 24 of the survey takers were 18-25 years old. 4 were 25-35. 1 was 35-50 and 1 was 50+.
5. 90% said that using a microphone or keyboard would be easier to get to shows, apps, etc. 10% don't have, use, or don't care about the feature.
Empathy Map
I have created empathy maps that will assist me in creating the journey map. I have created these from my interview participants. Here is an example of one of my empathy maps:

User Journey Map
I had pushed it back again as I figured a Storyboard would also help my user journey map along with my primary research findings. It would help me also see what the users do as well. I have started it but I have not finished it as I have been really busy between interviews, other homework, and work.

Planning Ahead
I am a bit behind on the consumer journey map. However, since I added a user flow map last time it did impact my timeline a bit. I do plan on finishing up the journey map and getting back on track with the timeline over break. My next production report should show that I am back on track with my timeline. However, I do feel as if I am still on track since I bumped up the interviews and primary research. I will be working over break to finish the needed stuff to be back on track.
My next production report should include my complete consumer journey map, mood boards, and updated user flow map using the analysis of my research findings, and starting the mock-up design.
