The last two weeks I have been diving into some more secondary research. I have finished my sketches. I did change some things around in my timeline. I have bumped Primary Research up a few weeks, as well as added a User Flow Map to replace the User Journey Map intended for this production report. I have bumped the User Journey Map back a week.
Primary Research
I have made interview questions along with scheduling interviews starting this week. I plan to get my primary research findings completed by the end of this week (hopefully). I have also made a survey/questionnaire to send out tomorrow and it will end Friday afternoon.
Here are a few questions from my survey:
1. Age
2. Do you watch TV?
a. How often?
3. Do you use an app for a remote?
a. How often?
b. If so, does your tv remote have a keyboard option/microphone?
c. If not, do you think it would be easier to get to apps, shows, etc. with either one?
4. Do you own a Samsung TV?
a. If so, do you use the SmartThings application as your TV remote?
b. If not, what TV brand do you have?
5. What buttons do you expect to see on a remote? (Choose all that expect)
a. On/off
b. Volume
c. Menu
d. Etc.
6. Were there any buttons you don’t know their function/don’t use? (choose all)
Secondary Research
My secondary research is basically finished for now! I have found a lot of information by researching and using my Penn State resources as well. I also went back and re-read some books from past classes to help me understand the UX Design process a bit better.
Research Recap:
I researched different remote applications such as Roku, FireStick, etc. to gain a better understanding of their UX design and relate it to my research. I have found certain buttons that are crucial elements to a remote and are needed in order to function the device properly.
New Findings:
I have gone through the SmartThings application reviews on App Store and Google Play. I have found that many individuals are frustrated with not having a keyboard function to type faster, which I intended to add as I get frustrated without not having it either. There were also complaints about the small buttons and that they should be a tad bigger. Many people also disapproved of the different pages to get to different buttons. A lot of the problems seem to be with the remote feature and most of the problems I have already stated. However, I have found other problems and UX issues with the SmartThings application that I can incorporate into my new design.
I researched different TV remote application design case studies to get some design ideas to continue with my sleek design.
As my user flow chart, user personas, and consumer journey map also aid in secondary research. I found my findings very helpful in developing my design.
Sketches
I have finished rough sketches of my wanted design. These sketches will aid me in eventually creating a mock-up design of the SmartThings television remote feature. Although they will probably be changing and I will be adding new sketches along the way, this is what I have planned out so far:

User Flow
I have created a user flow map, I have realized I did not incorporate that into my timeline so I decided to push the user journey map back a week. The user flow map helps me see what the user will be doing and how they will be interacting with the application.
My full user flow can be seen by clicking the photo below:
Planning Ahead
As for my primary research, I am ahead of schedule a bit but I decided to bump that up as it is a crucial need to keep going forward. Besides the user journey map, I am not behind in my timeline. By adding and bumping the primary research up I am ahead of schedule or right on track.
This next week will consist of interviews. After getting my interview research I will then incorporate that into updating my user flow chart and start creating the user journey map.
My next production report will include my interview findings as well as my user journey map. As I finish up my necessary research and data gathering I will continue analyzing my findings and updating necessary production scopes. This will then help me start to get into the design part of the project.
